Here’s a friendly bit of advice, but I’m only offering it to those who enjoy good food. I mean really good, fresh food in a comfortable, friendly atmosphere.
The next time you’re on the way to work or wherever and get a hankering for a delicious hot cup of coffee and a fresh baked good, a donut, biscuit or, perhaps, a sandwich, think Sweet Shop Donut Café at 1800 S. Creek One, just off Route 60.
Lots of folks throughout the county tell us that Sweet Shop has absolutely the best coffee in the county. Now, just imagine combining that coffee with an egg, bacon and cheddar sandwich on a glazed donut. “It’s over the top,” says Michele Ward, owner of the place. “And our burger on the donut is incredible.”
Of course, you can also enjoy your sandwich on a freshly baked biscuit, bun, bagel or on fresh-baked bread. In addition to sandwiches or their amazing 1/3 pound Black Angus Cheddar Burger, you can enjoy hot, homemade soup. Michele tells me their wings are the best in Powhatan, too.
This is the time of year when a lot of you are planning parties. Again, Think Sweet Shop. They cater offsite as well as onsite. The party room can seat up to 30 persons comfortably. Or, if you want to throw a shindig and invite all your friends and family, they can make the entire restaurant available for groups of 75 to 100 persons.
Perhaps, your party plans this year include a fresh homemade pie. You can pre-order your pumpkin, pecan, chocolate chess, and apple pies ahead of time and have them ready and waiting for you. They also have a fantastic pumpkin roll with crème cheese.
Michele says that to be safe, it’s best to give her capable staff two to three days notice, but even if you’ve procrastinated, give them a call. Often, you can order in the morning and have your pie by the afternoon.
You can also order your cake and eat it, too, as the old saying kinda goes. The Sweet Shop does custom-decorated cakes for virtually any occasion.
If you haven’t checked out this delightful café, please know that it’s much more than donuts. Although if all you want is a donut (and, yes, the best cup of coffee in the state), you will want to set your sights on the Sweet Shop Donut Café.
The café is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. On Saturday, they’re open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 8 until 2. Sleep in a bit and then head over for the best cup of coffee in the nation.
They’ve got lots of special events coming up including family game nights. Check their Facebook page for a full schedule.
Let me know when you’re heading over that way. I just might join you for a cup of the best coffee in the world.
